LAFFlines #2: In Our Apple Era
Note from Abby
Want to know one reason we’re called LAFFkitchen? Check out the delicapple recipe page (linked below) to see me try to split an apple.
When was the last time you spent a Friday night trying to rip an apple in two with your bare hands? It’s a good way to close the week, even if you’re unsuccessful. Last night I never got it. But Steve did: He popped an apple in half with just his hands. Maybe—if I watch this “how-to” video a hundred more times and get a massage and sprout new palms—I’ll split one next Friday. I am, after all, in my Granny Smith era. It started back in October at the Glade Road Growing farm share. I’ve never been a Granny Smith devotee. The taste of the grocery store ones never live up to their gleaming green allure. In contrast, the farm Granny Smiths don’t look so hot—they’ve got black speckles and some are humpbacked—but their taste is pure sunshine sass.
This week’s recipe, a gem-toned “delicapple” rice bowl, features Granny Smiths (sliced with a knife). The first Granny Smith tree supposedly grew from a crab apple core tossed out a window by a woman named Maria Ann Smith, in Australia, in the 1860s. It’s unknown whether she ever ripped one in half with only her bare hands.

Sweetgrass Yoga in Christiansburg: On Saturday, November 16 (next Saturday!), I’ll be at Sweetgrass Yoga from 10-10:30 am with free 8 ounce packages of LAFF for attendees of the 9-10 am FLOW class and 10:30-12 pm Deep Hip Yoga Lab workshop. You can register for the class and/or workshop on the Sweetgrass website or call the studio at (540) 315-6384. Sweetgrass Yoga is another local, woman-owned business.
Delicapple is a caramelized bite of autumn. My food styling and photography skills don’t do it justice.
Online orders through the LAFFkitchen website will open this week. Orders will be available for delivery or pick-up on Tuesday, November 19 and Sunday, November 25. Delivery within Blacksburg/Christiansburg will be free for the remainder of 2024. Pick-up will be available at Millstone Kitchen where I make LAFF.
Finally, Eats in Blacksburg is interested in carrying LAFF! I should have an update about that next Saturday. (In the meantime, if you drop by Eats—which I highly recommend—check out the “decomposition” notebooks made from compostable materials. They’re near the front window, not far from the freezer section.)
Recipe of the week
Best wishes for a beautiful, delicious, and laugh-filled week.
“Delicapple” Black Rice Bowl with Balsamic Glaze: Steve says this delicata squash - red cabbage - Granny Smith combo is his favorite roasted medley. The recipe page also has a short video of my apple splitting attempt.
